It can be confusing how it’s played out with our “ingredients”. Definitely not exactly like the Iron Chef show on TV......but we’re better than them anyway!
Ok, as for technique verses “dish”.
If the word/item in question can be used as a verb, then it is a technique.
For example: Stew.
I want some Beef Stew – That’s a Noun describing a dish, but notice that “Beef” was a required adjective to modify the Noun.
I’m going to stew some tomatoes – That’s a verb, so it is a technique.
Salad? Dish. You can’t say “I’m going to salad the lettuce”......well you could say that, but you’ll get some funny looks!
Roast? Technique. “I’m going to roast some Garlic”. BUT, it can be a dish with the right adjective.....Beef Roast, Pork Roast, Pot roast, etc.
Soup? Dish. You can’t say “lets soup the veggies”.
Gumbo? Dish. You can’t “gumbo a plate of seafood”.
So, in our Iron Chef, we allow singular ingredients around which we will make a Dish.
We also allow a Dish which we will then construct from varying ingredients.
When the challenge is about an ingredient, we are challenged to make a Dish of it.
When the challenge is about a Dish, we are challenged to come up with creative ingredients which we can combine to make said Dish.
So, if anyone wants to suggest something, just suggest an ingredient or a Dish, your choice. Just remember the test......if it can be used as a Verb, then it is a technique. But if it is a Noun, then that is a Dish.
Make sense?
