Found On Side Of The Road

I'm glad I'm not the only one here who is crazy for thrift stores and freebies!:a1: I found these on a back road a couple of months ago in a box with some garbage. None of it had ever been used or seasoned. I could see a handle sticking out and had to stop and investigate. Peeps moved and for some reason tossed it out or accidentally put the cast iron box out with the garbage. The box in the first pic has 3 more cast iron skillets in it! The second pic of cookware was still boxed and taped. Never opened! But it certainly has been now!:whistling:

SWEEEEEET! I love it when people find stuff they can use. I drive DW crazy when I stop to pick up stuff that falls out of people's vehicles, especially tools from contractors who are too lazy to put them away properly. I bet I own 20 hammers of which I only paid for 3 or 4 of them.

Good for you!

that's awesome I love finding stuff

I am a bit of a 2nd hand junkie although I have not been collecting lately... once my kitchen is back up and running I will

what brand is the CI I cannot make it out on the box?

It didn't have a brand name. They were giving those away about 6 or 7 years ago at H.E.B. if you bought a brisket or something!! I remember getting about 7 sets to use a stocking stuffers!

With all he economy problems and foreclosures in the area, it is a early morning paradise of goodies on the road sides in the mornings toward the end of the month and the 15th. I could really exceed the sites bandwidth with all the finds.
Found a 27" HP monitor a couple of weeks ago. Can't find a single thing wrong with it! Just have to sit across the room from my desk. Found 2 pools and all the equipment last week, but no way could I get it in the car. One of the guys at work went and made a couple of trips in his truck and sold them last weekend in a church fund raiser.
I'm still waiting to find a cobalt blue set of dinnerware and matching cookware!

Great haul!

There's a lesson here for all of us..........keep you eyes open, and don't pass up a good thing!

If I come up there, TC, can I go driving around with you?

I cleaned up 4 cast iron fry pans today that someone left behind when they vacated our place. 1-10", 2-8" and one 8" square. One of the 10" and 8" where Griswold once I got the inch of built up garbage off the bottom. The other 8" only says made in USA and it thinner than the Griswold by about 1/2 as thick and the square one is warped. I will keep the two griswolds and give the other 2 away. At any rate ran them through the oven with the oven cleaner one then took my wire brush on the drill to them. Then gave them a thin coat of lard and into the oven at 350 for an hour. Look like new.

Cast iron cookware may often be frowned upon by some cookware / food critics and they've been laying the badmouth on it for many years, claiming that food that's cooked in it might cause cancer, but they can say what they want!

It's unbeatable when it comes to slow cooking and tenderizing and breaking down the tough fibers and connective tissues in budget cuts of meat, roasts and for making some of the best tasting mouth-watering fried chicken in town!! I wouldn't trade it for the world!

Grandma used it, and so did Mom & Pop, and I'm quite sure that all of my brothers and sisters have at least one or two of the skillets. I parctically got a whole set of the cookware.

Indeed!!

And the brown bits and drippings left in the skillet makes a very delectible & luscious brown gravy! Put that over some hot cooked rice, pasta or masned potatoes. Delish!!!

cast iron is indeed one of the greatest cooking tools and one of the most fun things to find in a thrift or yard sale. Something about taking some rusty gunky piece of trash and turning it into a beautiful functional cooking tool is really satisfying. because of this I have entirely too much* cant wait to get my kitchen done so I can get it back out.

*disclaimer it really is impossible to have too much CI but I do have more that I "need"

There is no such thing as too much CI!! Gotta have it!!
To heck with the scientific reports!! All our relatives used it and there has been no cancer in my family and the all lived to be in their late 80' and up!
I'm in for even more!!
Still lookin' for the cobalt blue!

That is incredible TC! How does everyone find such good stuff on the side of the road? :w00t:

Our neighbor, the 21 year old that DW has “adopted” finds all kinds of stuff. He recently brought home a 6.5 HP mulching push mower that works great. Also found a weed eater. The mower needed a new plug, and the muffler on the weed eater was clogged and needed to be soaked in gas and cleaned. Now they both run like champions.

He’s found TV, radios, all kinds of stuff.

I’ve got to start driving the back roads more often!! Heck, I may go for a ride right now!

Cast iron is also good to accelerate defrosting of frozen foods. We regularly place our frozen foods inside a large skillet or on top of a griddle to hasten defrosting.

I am way more afraid of cookware that has "nonstick" coating, especially teflon.

There is actually some new teflon coatings that are safe. I have 2 scan pan Pro pans that are certified green that I've been using for over a year now to cook eggs with. They look like the day I bought then and are still very none stick. Some things I don't do with them is cook above medium heat for example, eggs are usually done below medium heat. I will also be buying 2 more to replace these to in the soon to be available Scan Pan CTX which will work on my induction cook top. The older Pro Line looks the same but is aluminum based while the CTX are magnetic stainless based. All their pans are certified green in that there are PFOB free.

That so-called theory on Teflon or other nonstick coatings in cookware causing cancer, was never really proven as far as I'm concerned!

Critics will lay the bad mouth on just about anything concerning food or cookware!!

What makes teflon dangerous is high heats, medium and lower are fine though. When high heats are applied they give off a gas that will say kill a bird that one might have a few feet away. Supposedly the gas is a result of bonding the teflon to the pan the way I understand it. I've never heard it caused cancer.

Yeah, they were saying that years ago, that it supposedly caused cancer.

Supposedly from some unknown ingredient that is used in the manufacturing process of the nonstick coating. I never believed it, but who can tell? Again, it like; Pick your poison. :glare:

Like I said Sherman the best none stick is cast iron or steel pans properly seasoned. None stick I find are great for eggs but use them for nothing else really. If I going to sear meats it is either cast iron or stainless steel for me.

Yes, cast iron cookware is excellent for searing chops, steaks and roasts.

My 5-qt pre-seasoned Lodge Dutch oven is perfect for searing and braising pot roasts! Love it!!

PFOA's...Dupont has hid evidence on PFOA's and has paid 10's of millions in penalties because if it...Also they have since agreed to eliminate the use of PFOA's by 2010...

Regardless, I prefer CI and have been collecting and using it as much as I can because I like the results I get from cooking with it.
