On a whim, my wife and I are taking a 3 day trip to Las Vegas for our 10th wedding anniversary... a return to the honeymoon!

Got any suggestions?

Buffet to be sure to hit?
Is the Lotus of Siam Thai place worth the cab ride?
Best slots? hahaha an oxymoron!
Good cheap stuff to do?

We aren't show goers or partiers....

Kimchee, I go a couple of times a year, for the last 20 years or so, and just got back week before last. We love that town!

If you ask 100 people, you'll get a hundred different answers, but I'll tell you how we like to do Vegas.

Are you on the strip or downtown? Fremont st (downtown) is much more affordable, and if you want to eat at a nice restaurant, go to Binions ranch, on the 24th floor of Binions hotel/casino. Make your reservation for after dark because its all glass and the view of the city at night makes for a magical backdrop for an excellent meal. I'm not a fan of lobster, but my wife would leave me if she didn't get one of their chicken fried lobster tails when we are there. She describes it as "heaven on a plate". Myself, I opt for one of their melt-in-your-mouth ribeyes. In 20 years, I have never had a bad meal, or service there.

There is so much to see and do its overwhelming. Try and plan out your daily excursions to avoid redundant cab rides, as that gets expensive rather quick. You can take advantage of "the deuce" a double decker bus that goes between downtown and the strip, and its 7$ per person for the entire day. Be warned though-it makes a lot of stops, and isn't always there when you want it to be. Theres also a monorail that travels the length of the strip-you can buy an all day ticket and ride as much as you like between the Sahara and MGM grand, and it stops at all the major hotels along theway. Its very fast and efficient.

The "The sirens of TI" (treasure island) is a free outdoor show in the evenings that is neat to see, as is the erupting volcano right next door at the Mirage. As far as buffets go, The Rio has a really good one, and if your downtown, while its not as flashy, The Main Street station also has a very good one, and its quite a bit cheaper. As far as "best slots" (?) go, We have a lot of luck downtown, particularly at the Four Queens lately. I like "Pinball" and "Top dollar" machines-they are usually pretty good to us, and this last trip was no exception-our last day there, we paid for our entire trip!

I could go on, but theres so much to see and do, its literally sensory overload. When you get to your room, there will be a "Whats on" magazine there-use it. Its divided into catagories like dining, shows, gambling etc, and has a nice little map if your unfamiliar with the town. Grab a Starbucks, sit down and go though it and plan out your day. And don't be afraid to ask the hotel employees if your not sure about something-it seems most are happy to help!

Have fun-I wish I was going!

I've never been, but my husband took my 2 oldest boys when the younger one turned 21. They had a wonderful time. They especially loved the Star Trek bar (can you say "geek"?), where the bartenders are Clingons who insult you. There was an amazing pirate show outside of one of the hotels, too.

I had suggested they see Blue Man, but DH decided to get Rick Springfield tickets at the last minute. (It was considerably cheaper.) He still hasn't lived that one down!

(You know, it sounds like you should just take SmokeKing with you to make sure you hit the best spots. LOL)

What a wonderful way to celebrate your 10th, Kimchee! Take lots of pics and my congratulations to the both of you.

Smoke King, we are actually at Treasure Island. I suggested downtown, but was outvoted by the Boss, sigh.
We are contemplating getting a 3 day bus pass for $15 and exploring off strip a bit!
Pinball sounds like my kind of slot, at least by name! LOL
(last visit, my wife paid for our gambling and then some on the slots too.)

Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, that would be in the belly of the slot and video game machines, LOL! ;)

Congrats in advance on your 10 year anniversary.

Vegas is one of my fave getaways, but haven't been there in awhile. There are all kinds of new attractions I haven't seen. Here's a good overview from my go-to source - Frommer's:

We usually drive, & personally, I recommend having a car, or renting one. Don't know when you are going, but during the summer it's 120 degrees. This is a good time to go, IMHO. I stay on or near the strip, don't care much for downtown. Food & hotels are inexpensive. If you want to have a fancy dinner, make all reservations as soon as you check in. The hotel lobbys may have coupon books. Clip what appeals to you.

We do the buffets, hang out in the pool, casinos, go to a few shows, & sightsee. If you have the time, see the Grand Canyon (they have tours/helicopter rides too), Hoover Dam, etc.

We do the big all you can eat buffets about mid-day, & avoid the dinner crowds -- maybe have a very light dinner in the evening. Some fancier restaurants may be less expensive for lunch, rather than dinner.

Never heard of the Thai restaurant, but there is so much food & inexpensive buffets w/ prime rib etc., etc., etc. to choose. We did get a steak & lobster dinner w/ salad downtown for about $5.99 years ago.

Re slots -- used to play the "lose" slot machines. Seems like most of them have "tightened" up. Zip, zip zip, & your money is gone. Heard that playing/sitting on the aisle machines pay off (to attract folks), don't know if that's true. Did win a few times (not much to speak of), at about 4:00 AM - before 5 big security guards came in to empty the machines.

If I think of anything else, will let you know. Have a great time :)

The girls have been asking about you.

One New Year's Eve we stayed at the Excaliber (below). (It was the only place I could get last-minute reservations.) Tip: Don't drink too much, or you may have trouble finding your room -- all the castles looked alike. LOL)
