I want to make a 15-Bean Soup for my father, and would normally flavor it with ham. But he's not crazy about ham.

What alternatives would you suggest?

bacon, pork, chicken... my first choice would be
pork.

Bacon, smoked turkey breast, smoked sausage (like Hillshire farms kielbaso or lil' smokies)?

a soup base, & my Dad's put braised cuts of beef into many soups/stews.

I made a 15 bean soup last weekend and the package of dried beans I picked up at the market came with a packet of ham flavoring in it - good stuff. Of coarse, no imagination, I cooked the soup with ham hocks - that was really good, too. But I'd sure go with the Kialbasa or sausage, as well.

I'm with Peeps.
Li'l Smokies would be great in the soup.

Here's a recipe Lee where they used the smokies and bulk pork sausage.
Carrots and mushrooms too.
Yummy stuff by the looks and sound of it!

I always use a smoked ham hock in my bean soups but figure bacon would also work especially a smoked bacon.

I did think of the smoked turkey wing, VB, and that's a possibility.

Not sure I've ever seen a beef shank, but I'm sure both Dad and I would love that!
