Got a whole chicken for 99 cents a pound.. $5 bucks or so.

Roasted it, let it cool, stripped the meat from the bones,
and had enough for 3 meals with generous chicken quantity...
Plus 8 pints of homemade broth for use in anything that needs
water...
plus a nice pile of boneless tendons, defatted skin, gristle and
such to chop finely and mix into the dogs' food so they will
stay spoiled! :)

That's $1.66 meat cost per meal, and to buy 4 quarts of stock
would be in the range of $8.00 or more.

(Although, to be honest, I REALLY like finding the baked whole
chicken on quick sale at Krogers for like $3.50. Doesn't happen
here in IN too much, but in NC, I scored often!)

We often grab the rotisserie chicken at Sam's and usually end up making meat pies or soup with leftover and carcass. Cheap meat to mix with our own veggies.

I always buy whole chickens. Usually 2 at a time so we can have the legs and thighs one night and the breasts another. Bbq or Asian leg quarters and something like goat cheese stuffed breasts. You know, mix it up a bit. Cheap as heck if you have a decent pantry.

I buy the 2-pack of chickens from Sam's Club for $.89/lb.. One gets used for roasting which gets us two meals plus one lunch for me, and the other gets deboned completely. The bones and skin go into the freezer for soup. The breasts get split so we get two meals from that, and the legs/thighs get used for stir-fry. the stir-fry always has enough left over for me to have lunch the next day. Pretty good value.
