We kind of need a section Doc that is controlled by the moderators for these types of posts. They also need to be handy for all users to access as I posted one on smoke points of various types of cooking oils when I first came.

Salute
I've mentioned a couple times that it would be nice to have a section with cooking info in it, like a glossary of sorts with terms, descriptions and other useful info that usually has one heading to Google and then another site. I don't know about the mods controlling it though... I think one person could keep it in better order. They seem to have their hands pretty full as it is.

What I meant by the mods controlling it is say a member posts a tread with some information in it that is similar to this post. Then the mod would copy that information to a single location with out the remarks leaving the orginal information it tack for people to post too. I hope that was clear and I agree we need a section with general cooking terms, definitions, general information etc.

Would you be talking about a cooking reference section, with just info and no comment? That could be done easy enough with a section mods only can post to, but all members can see. All that has to be done is when a member sees a post that belongs in that section they can report it and it will be copied over without comments. It would be easy enough. Lets see what Doc thinks.

We have some conversion tools at http://www.recipesonrails.com/conversions We spent a good amount of time trying to find the weight/volume conversion for many pantry items.

Default Re: Cooking conversions...

US kitchen and farm units (carpenters and architects etc too) are based on adding and dividing by two and sometimes three.

3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
2 Tbs.= 1 ounce
2 oz = 1 wineglassfull (1/4 cup)
2 Wgf = 1 gill (1/2 cup)
1 gills = 1 cup
2 c. = 1 pint
2 pts. = 1 quart
2 qt. = 1 half gallon ( a half gallon is a whole measure)
2 half gallons = 1 gallon (duh)
2 gal. = 1 peck
2 pecks = 1 half bushel
2 half bushels = 1 bushel

Once upon a time a barrel was 4 bushels. This is all measurements by volume of course. I think a quarter barrel was a keg but I could be wrong about that.

I bought a gill copper drinking cup at the Victoria Maritime Museum a few years ago. I have some old recipes that call for gill measurement. I can remember when cans were called by numbers, as well.
