Default Problem growing cucumbers

I haven't tried growing cukes in my container garden for over a decade, because all I got was golf ball-sized cukes.

My friend convinced me to try again, so I put three plants in a large pot in her yard (she gets all-day sun), and I harvested the first cuke.

Same thing. This is a regular-sized variety.

Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

Lee

. . . container gardening

likely the problem - inconsistent water/moisture makes for golf ball/pears.
containers are extra tricky for watering practices . . .

Yeah, but Chowder, all my other plants thrive.

You think cukes are particularly picky?

containers have their advantages - but also some problems. for example tomatoes in pots - the root mass / soil can easily overheat and affect plants. in Boston your ambient temps shouldn't be an issue but if the pots are dark and exposed to direct sun most of the day, that can cook the roots. a lot of stuff like beans thrive in warm(er) soil but tomatoes and peppers for example prefer cooler roots.

some stuff is more sensitive to inconsistent moisture levels - I was looking for a list but didn't turn up anything particularly useful.
