Coney Island-Style Chili Dog

Topping Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 (six oz) can tomato paste
1 Cup water
1 Tablespoon light brown sugar
1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
1 Tablespoon dried, minced onion
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon celery seed, crushed
3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

For the Topping;
In a 2 qt. saucepan, brown the ground beef completely, breaking into
very small pieces. Season lightly with salt and pepper during cooking.
Do not drain the fat.
Add the remaining ingredients. Simmer over low heat, uncovered, 30-45
minutes until it thickens. Stir occasionally; do not allow to stick.

Remove from heat and let stand until it cools down; cover and refrigerate until needed.

For the Dogs
1. Bring a 2 qt. saucepan of water to a rolling boil.
2. Remove the saucepan from the heat, and add the desired
number of franks to the water. Cover and let sit about
10 minutes.
3. After the franks are done, microwave the chili dog sauce
until steaming. (Only microwave what you need, save the rest)
Then microwave each hot dog roll 10 seconds just enough to warm

Line a roll with a little of the sauce, add the frank, and top with more of the sauce.
Dig in !

Sounds great. I will try this one.

I grew up going to CI every summer. Nothing like getting some dogs at Nathan's

It's not a direct hit, but close enough to make you smell the salt water and hear the screams of the kids on the ....umm Cyclone, was it ??

You know what I miss ? Those street-corner dogs with the tomato-sauced up onion toppers.......
I tried to match that too; I'll see if i can dig that one up......

Yes, ity was the Cyclone. I also loved the bobsled.

I also love the hot dogs with the onion tomato sauce & mustard. I have a version of it, but I don't have it written down. Next time I make it I will write down what I use. The one I make is based on my mothers onions that were made with some pepper flakes for a kick.

Thanks LT-
I been wanting a coney for awhile!
West Coast has a Fast Food -Hot Dog Stand. (The meat is actually pretty Good). I went and and asked for 1/2 Dozen Coney's to go! The counter Dude tells me "We don't have Coney's here". I am staring at a picture of a Conely Island Hot Dog- And The Dude Says "We Don't have Coney's Here"!
I told him to turn around and look at the picture. "OH THATS A CHILI DOG"!
