Gringo Subs

S.Shepherd will probably know what these are. This is a copycat I came up with after having one of these sandwiches from Andy's Pizza when I lived in Michigan.

Gringo Subs
Yields: 6 sandwiches

1 package good sub buns, or a good baguette, cut into 6” lengths and split horizontally
2 c shredded mozzarella
1# good deli ham, sliced thin
1 medium onion, sliced
8 oz container of Italian Salad dressing
1 c corn syrup

Preheat the broiler to it’s highest setting.
Pour the salad dressing into a bowl or a squeeze bottle. Mix in the corn syrup and combine well. Place into a squeeze bottle and store in the refrigerator.
Open the buns, and place them on a sheet pan. Even divide the ham between the buns, and layer it attractively on the bottom bun. Place some sliced onions on the ham. Place some shredded cheese on the top bun. Place in the oven, 4” from the top element, and bake 5 minutes, until the cheese is melted. When done, remove, squirt a little of the sweetened dressing on the onions, and place the top bun on the bottom. Toothpick the sandwiches, and cut on a bias. Serve with chips, soup, or salad.
