I just bought my first vacuum sealer last week - http://www.breville.com.au/products_detail.asp?prod=484 in the post-Xmas sales for below half price. Haven't tried it yet so found this thread very interesting. Probably just as well I didn't see it before I bought mine though - probably would have made me even more indecisive!

I think I saw that one at Chafscatalog.com once. Don't know if they still sell it though.

I just looked. It's not there now.

In fact, all they sell now are the vacuum sealer BAGS.

I bought extra bags for the Breville cos I thought it might be a end-of-line thing. I want to try it - just haven't got anything yet that needs vacuuming - well other than the floor!!!

I'm just gonna have to stay with the Ziplock Hand Pump Vacuum bag Sealer and its bags until I can buy and afford a suitable commercial vacuum bag sealer.

I want a heavy duty one that will stand up to many uses a day - one that won't limit you as to how many times you can use it in a day with no 'rest' time in between to slow things down, and MOST of all, one that won't wimp out in only a short time in use!!

Ok guys, I've decided that I want to try THIS one, the VacMaster, so I've just ordered it from Amazon.com, along with some extra roll bags and quart-size bags.

It should work and not be problematic like the FoodSaver units are that kept on giving me trouble & headaches.

Y'Know, I have revisited this as a result of the untimely passing of my foodsaver. I noted that Amazon and other etailers so not offer the same model as foodsaver. I so not know about stores. I cannot imagine going to a store anyway. What I am thinking is that buying from the mfgr night be a good plan. I have disected my old one. It appears to be well built.

$197.00.

A package deal with two packs of the vacuum bags was offered for a total of about 225.63, so I bought it, knowing that some bags are going to be needed.

I think some bags come with it though, to get you started.

And BTW, it has been shpped and it's on it's way here!

I was going to get a Seal-A-Meal unit, but I decided to try the VacMaster instead.

It looks more promising.

Sorry, Fisher's Mom, but I'm not trying to put your unit down. I just think that I might do better with the VacMaster, hopefully.

And BTW, I'm not being charging for S&H on this order. I qualified for and got the Supersaver deal on S&H.

Maybe the BB&B by you got all the rejects. lol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarden

Sorry to have to be or sound like a Devil's Advocate on this, Homecook.

But I can almost promise you that the machines that you bought 5, 10 or even 15 years ago are NOT like the ones made today. Yours are more than likely very reliable. The ones made today are not reliable by ANY MEANS.

When you get the chance, please go over to Amazon.com and read some of the reviews there on the FoodSaver units. There are a ton of dissatisfied & unhappy customers there, myself included (I'm Daquan13 over there). Not sure if you're saying that it's just me, but I'm just not putting any more trust into these units.

And besides, I did some research (I think that someone here mentioned this to me), and found out that in April of '02, Tilia, the original maker of the FoodSaver units, was bought out by another co. that operates under the Jarden Corporation. Link is posted above.

Tilia doesn't even make the machines any more, which probably says an awful lot about the quality of the machines, which isn't much to write home about or to jump up and scream about.

When I found that out, I began to put 2 & 2 together. Have you ever noticed that in their commercials now, the word Tilia is not mentioned any more and has been left out? Nor is it written on the boxes that the machines come in any more.

Pure evidence that FoodSaver, or the co that now makes them, no longer puts the quality, reliability and trust that was in the units around the time that you bought yours. Tilia sold itself out to some unheard-of co whose name I can't even remember!

It's seems like a sad state of affairs that a co that's been around for a while, making quality products, has sold out, and when it did, the quality and trust went right out the window along with it.

Good Morning Sherm. I have been thinking a lot about this thread since I messed up my foodsaver. First Foodsaver has indeed changed hands. It is owned by Jarden consumer Solutions. So far as not hearing of them before, neither have I. So I went to their website. They own a n awful lot of companies that I have heard of. Interesting enough, they won both FoodSaver and Seal a meal.

I was also in a quandary about what to replace my FoodSaver with. I read what you said about wanting to seal bags non stop no waiting in between a very high volume of bags. I just don't do that much sealing. I shop once a week for two and might seal 5 or 6 bags a week. I thne noted that I have a lot of foodsaver bags on hand. I did a little reserch and cannot find the model that FoodSaver is selling at their website listed ad BB&B, Amazon or elsewhere. I recall you bought units at BB&B. Then I looked at Foodsaver's website and found that they are running a pretty good deal right now. I also reasoned that selling more units than anyone else that there "Might" be support available for a unit bought directly from them.

Anyway, I ordered a FoodSaver and anxiously await it's arrival. I will use up the last of my Handi-vac bags and hope the sucker stays working till my stock is gone and then use the Foodsaver exclusively. I will post here good or bad.

Good morning to you as well, Adillo!

I hope that you'll have much better luck with the one that you ordered that I with the ones I had.

Yeah, Jarden also owns Oster, Rival, Patton & Sunbeam as well.

Well, they must also own Holmes as well, because Holmes makes certain models of the Patton high-velocity fans.

I doubt that in this day and age if ANY co makes their own products now, because there is so much outsourcing and selling out of companys left and right! It's so awful because it seems that it's all about the Benjimens!! They want the money, but their products leave much to be desired.

It's a lowdown dirty shame when co's do this, because it's usually the product, in and of itself, that suffers from poor quality because the co's that take over making them hire cheap labor and sometimes child labor and the products are then made in foreign countries and quality control goes right out the window, which in turn, says a lot about FoodSaver. I think that FoodSaver already knows that their machines are no good, but cares very little if any, about the fact that the quality in their machines has gone completely down hill, but they could probably care less if their customers are satisfied or not.

I just thought about something;

No wonder there are so many dissatisfied owners of the new Crockpot Slow Cookers!! Some have said that the thing literally boils the food because it gets way too hot!

I'm so glad that my 5-qt old one that I've had for over 30 years still works very well!! A lot of members at Epinions.com are not satisfied with the new ones.

Good news!

My new VacMaster Vacuum Bag Sealer came this afternoon!!

Tried it out already and it seems to work very well!! The unit vacuums and seals the bags a heck of a lot faster than the FoodSaver units ever did. Almost instantly!!

So far, I like it! I'll be using it from time to time, testing it and the bags that were alredy vacuum sealed, to see if they've come loose at all. They shouldn't though.

A bit noisier than the FoodSaver units, but I don't care, as long as it works as it should, and so far, it is working good.

The Vacmaster Pro 130.

There IS a cheaper model for about half the price, but I thought that I'd try THIS one instead.

I looked in the freezer just this morning to switch some frozen liquids over to the new VacMaster Bags, and was totally appauled because I found two items that were previously vacuum sealed in those crappy FoodSaver bags that had worked themselves friggen loose!!! The food was just moving all around in bags full of air!

God, I hate those machines and their supposed vacuum seal bags!! So I removed the items from those bags and redid them over with the newer ones.
