Default Rep points (aka Karma points) Explained.

Rep points .... aka Karma points.

Reputation points = your reputation here on Net Cooking Talk.
You can see what your points are in your User Control Panel (aka UCP or CP)
In there you will also see the last 6 entries by those who have given you points (or taken away points) from you.

Everyone starts out with 10 points.

Anyone can add to or take away from your reputation, unless their reputation is less than 10 points, then they cannot give you good or bad rep points (to clarify: bad rep points subtract from your total rep points, while good points add to your total points).

If a user with less than 20 posts or a user with less than 10 rep points attempts to give you rep points, the attempt will show in your UCP, like all others, but it will show as zero points, in other words no impact to your overall rep.

Everyone except the admin starts with a rep power of 1, meaning you can give or take away 1 point when you add to or take away from someone's rep.

For every 365 days you are a member you gain 1 rep power point. For every 1000 posts you gain 1 rep power point. So for example say you've now been a member for 1 year and posted 2000 times. You then have a rep power of 4. When you add or take away from another users rep you would be giving or taking away 4 rep points.

point breakdown:
1 you started with
1 you earned for 365 days of being a member
2 you earned by your total number of posts
Total = 4 That is also called your rep power.

The rep points indicate folks liking your posts or not liking them. When you see a post you like (or don't like) you click on the scales in the upper right hand corner along the top edge of the post. This will let you either agree or disagree with the post. Comments are optional but encouraged.

One last note, you cannot give rep points to any one particular member all the time. The system keeps track of who you've given to. You have to spread the points around to other users before you can return and give more to the same user. Currently that number is set to 6, but with time as we gain more active members the number will change.

Here's the levels. You can see what level they are at by holding your mouse over the little green cylinder close to the top right corner. While it will not show the points, instead it gives the saying for that level. A new user will say he is on the distinguished road. That means he has 10 points and as he goes past 50 points the saying will change to xxx will become famous soon enough. Folks can give negative points too.

In your cp you can see your most recent points and who gave them to you.

Jim

I think this is the way Doc has it set up:

-99999 = xxx is infamous around these parts
-50 = xxx can only hope to improve
-10 = xxx has a little shameless behavior in the past
0 = xxx is an unknown quantity at this point
10 = xxx is on a distinguished road
50 = xxx will become famous soon enough
150 = xxx has a spectacular aura about
250 = xxx is a jewel in the rough
350 = xxx is just really nice
450 = xxx is a glorious beacon of light
550 = xxx is a name known to all
650 = xxx is a splendid one to behold
1000 = xxx has much to be proud of
1500 = xxx has a brilliant future
2000 = xxx has a reputation beyond repute

There's a Bronze, Silver, and Gold level above these, I don't have the points for those.

That's something Doc would have to set up. You thinking of anyone in particular?

I know for a fact that one can be told that one has given out the karma limit for a 24 hour period. I love to give it out and it happened elsewhere, so I am not surprised. To me karma was always a way to brighten someone's day and let them know I think they are grand!

If doc does have a limit set I've only recently had an opportunity to test it

I think it is how much you give rather than recieve. So perhaps you should try giving us all some.

i got one of those too, from who else but ronjohn. does it mean the same as "i disapprove"? or negative karma from an admin?

i guess ronjohn must have been hittin' the sauce again and forgot to check approve when sending the reputation points. i'm sure of it.

Uh oh - now I'm really worried I may have given someone neutral karma. Hey, if anyone has gotten anything but positive rep points from me - please, please, please let me know so I can fix that.

Let me say this whole Buddy Chat/Visitor messaging, Friends list, KARMA thing is new to me.

Seems every forum I'm on has these things, I just never cared to pay attention to them or partake. Part of it is if someone is on a friends list I believe they can 'see' you even if your set to invisible (?). OTOH this site is different, I have only hinted at my political views once, I think I'm not on any stalker list. Least not here.

These things have always seemed to me to be popularity scoreboards, which means there is a contest of sorts. I look for external affirmation just like most other people, I don't put much stock in the score. I just left a site that seems all they worried about was who was kissing who, just like High School, and just like a system with the lass than mature take one step outside of permissible parameter of group think and BANG, Your gone.

But I digress.

I went to give Karma, I think. I didn't see "Karma" anywhere in the window, Nope. Oh, it's add to rep. Ok.

Give me time.

{edit}Tried reading the OP in this thread, I feel partially lobotomized. LOL{/edit}
.

I just looked and Fisher's Mom gave me neutral but no big deal to me at all. This is really new to me too Wart and I've been on the net with forums for a long time. Didn't even notice them until just recently. I'm also never used the add friends thing nor again ever saw it before.

How do you give neutral rep points?? It just says "disapprove" or "approve"?? Now I'm lost. I did notice the blue/grey boxes but really didn't give it much thought.

No idea Barb, I guess if you just click on it then it might but not really sure. I'm sure Doc or one of the moderators would know.
