Trimming Clematis?

My Clematis is having a particularly great Spring this year, after the worst winter in a long time. The photos don't do it justice - much prettier in real life!

Such a reliable plant! It comes back bigger and better every year!

I do not cut this back when it gets brown in the fall - the new growth comes on the the old growth.

But I think it could use some trimming. I've looked online, and am confused by the info. Evidently, there are 2 or 3 categories of clematis and the trimming is different for each.

Does anyone know how, when and IF I should trim mine?

regrets, I'm not sufficient expert to say which variety that is, however:
http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/growing-clematis-vines.html

is a reliable guide and outlines the Group 1,2,3 of clematis.

if the tag is still available, that would help.

Group 1 blooms only on old wood, 2 first bloom on old but then 2nd blooms on new, and group 3 bloom on new growth.

so yup, can be confusing. one tip, if the stems get large and woody, it's likely 1 or 2; the group 3 vines don't get big&thick....

That link was helpful, Chowder - thanks!

I think mine is type 2, as it does have a second, lesser bloom, later in the season.

I'm going to take a crack at pruning it, since it's getting kinda big.
