Frugal: Fries & Wings
You can actually get some really great deals at the new Dollar General outlets called the “Dollar General Market”. These market type stores are way bigger than the average Dollar General, and they have coolers for meat and frozen food, as well as bins for fresh produce. Shop wisely, and you can grab some real steals.
Also, watch your sales papers!
Tonight we have:
1 – 4 lb bag frozen Chicken Wings = $6.00 on sale ($7.00 is regular price)
1 – 10 lb bag of Idaho Potatoes = $3.29
1 – can Pork & Beans @ $0.50 per can
For tonight’s dinner, I’m cooking for two as always (it’s just as…..but Cricket likes some scraps!)
I did:
1.25 lbs chicken wings = $1.88 (8 wings, 4 per person)
3/4 lb potatoes = $0.25
1 can Pork & Beans = $0.50
Total = $2.63
We used oil from the pantry for frying, and basic condiments for the sides.
The wings are frozen, so I put them in a salt & water brine to thaw and brine them at the same time. Once they were thawed and brined, they were ready to fry.
I fired the wings first, then drained and cooled them, then coated them in BBQ sauce and baked them for 5 minutes to set the sauce.
The potatoes were cut and boiled for 5 minutes, then cooled in the fridge, then fried till done.
So at the end of it all, we had two plates with 4 HUGE wings (these wings are the biggest I’ve ever seen), fresh fries, and pork & beans.
All for $2.63 = $1.32 per person.
Granted we have extras that are stocking the freezer and pantry:
3.75 lbs of chicken wings to cook later
9.25 lbs of potatoes to cook later
So: A $9.79 upfront investment, $2.63 for a meal for two out of that, and several pounds of food for the freezer and fridge to be used in later meals!
Stretch your dollar my friends!
