Another outbreak of salmonella linked to live poultry in backyard flocks has been identified, bringing the total number of outbreaks now under investigation nationwide to eight and nearly doubling the case count, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention said this week in an update on the agency’s website.
The latest outbreak adds 287 more cases in 10 states to the fold, which now includes a total of 611 ill people in a total of 45 states.
Of all those cases, 138 people were hospitalized and one death was reported, although CDC noted that Salmonella was not determined to be the cause of death in that case.
Illnesses started on dates ranging from Jan. 4 to June 25.
