TRUTH !!
The USA experiences an average 1,200 tornadoes each year. Each State has
experienced at least one tornado over time. The state that has the fewest
tornadoes is Alaska, but even Alaska is not tornado free, with two reported
tornadoes since becoming a state (one in 1959 and one in 2006). Hawaii
averages one tornado per year.
Florida is one of the most tornado prone states, with only Texas, Kansas
and Oklahoma reporting more storms. During the period 1950 to 2006, Florida
reported 2,884 tornadoes according to NCDC figures.
The vast majority of tornadoes form in the late afternoon.
On June 3, 1980, the city of Grand Island, Nebraska was hit with seven
tornadoes in the space of three hours, one of which was an F-5 !

Does anyone know what constitutes a tornado (lazy today and did not google for an answer). The reason I ask is when I was working in Columbus Ohio I saw one go directly overhead. It never did touch down. This was last century and I can't remember but I 'thought' they still called that a tornado. My question is does it have to touch ground to be considered a tornado?

A few years ago one touched down one mile from my house. A house was completely devastated. Turned to ruble. His next door neighbors house was still in tact just fine. You could see the path of the tornado so clear. I had heard tornados do not go up and down hills. This one must not have known the rules as it devastated property all the way to the bottom of a number of valleys it past over.

A mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance oof a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system. A waterspout that moves over land becomes a tornado.

Also, a person or thing characterized by violent or devastating action or emotion.

Also, Doc;
New research from the University of Arkansas finds that tornadoes cause greater damage when traveling uphill -- and that the twisters tend to climb toward higher elevations rather than going downhill.

unless it touches down or gets close enough to the ground to pick up debris / do damage / etc I think they just call it a funnel cloud.

This is the part my neighbor down the road and I were talking about. The one that hit here obviously did not follow the rules. It did go downhill (in multiple places). But as we all know. Rules are made to be broken.

Thanks guys for your answers!!!!!
