Lewis Tappan and James Pennington fought in court for the rights of the
African slaves, and to be returned to their homeland. Lewis Tappan argued
that while slavery was legal in Cuba, importation of slaves from Africa was
not. The slaves were released and returned to their home, but Sengbe Pieh
(or Joseph Cinque, the name the slavemasters gave him) found his wife and
children had been killed.
