The recipe takes me back - usually using ground beef, canned or frozen veggies, & mashed potatoes. But, I have seen many variations using mashed sweet potatoes, ground turkey or leftover roast beef, thinly-sliced russets over the top drizzled w/ butter, beer/tomato paste/veg or beef broth added to the "gravy", prepared in ramekins or a casserole dish. Get jiggy w/ it. ;-)

Here's an interesting read & def on Shepherd's Pie & Cottage Pie:

Open Faced Shepherd's Pie

for traditional Shepherd's Pie, i take lamb meat(not ground),beef(not ground), season the meat, coat with seasoned flour, fry in small amount of oil, remove meat when browned on all sides, deglaze with a good red wine, then add some beef stock back to the pan, meat back in and let it cook until the meat is fall apart tender...

after that you can make it like the other recipes shown

just make sure whatever recipe you use has thyme as a spice...
that's the secret ingredient!
