My family and neighbors when I was growing up always had "grey" corned beef for boiled dinners. Tastes pretty much the same, just not red from the nitrates when it is cooked. I think it might be a New England thing and my father prefers it.
As an adult, I saw only the red corned beef in stores, other than some local butcher shops that corn their own beef and charge a fortune for it.
Today, I saw this STEAL of a deal, right in my regular supermarket! A small, almost 3 pound FLAT, grey corned beef, for 99 cents a pound! Into the freezer it went for a New England boiled dinner the next time Dad gets to visit!
