Default Setton expands pistachio recall to include 2008 crop

Oh, this sux. Now Pistachios will cost twice as much!

TERRA BELLA, CALIF. Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., a division of Setton International, has expanded its recall to include all lots of roasted in-shell pistachios and roasted shelled pistachios that were produced from nuts harvested in 2008. The company also is recalling raw shelled pistachios from the 2008 crop that were not roasted prior to retail sale.

The Food and Drug Administration announced Monday evening that Salmonella had been detected in "critical areas" of the Terra Bella facility that may have led to cross-contamination of product.

The F.D.A. has advised wholesalers, retailers, and food service operators not to sell or serve any pistachios or pistachio-containing products until the source of the pistachios may be determined. Food processors may be able to confirm that pistachios or pistachio products are associated with Setton by checking the list of products being recalled because they contain Setton pistachios. It is available on the F.D.A. web site at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/script...call/index.cfm. The list is being updated regularly but does not reflect all products that may contain pistachios from Setton, according to the F.D.A.

In an effort to inform manufacturers and consumers about brands and companies not involved in the current recall of pistachio products, Cal-Pure, a co-op of California pistachio growers, and the Western Pistachio Association, have launched www.pistachiorecall.org. The site also is accessible directly through the F.D.A. web site devoted to the recall of products manufactured by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. and its parent company Setton International. The site lists brands unaffected by the recall and will be updated as the recall situation evolves, according to the developers.
