Shelley Malil, 43, played Haziz, the younger of two Indian-American colleagues who worked in the electronics store run by Carell's unfortunate Andy Stitzer in the Judd Apatow comedy which made the latter a star. Police say he attacked Kendra Beebe, a 35-year-old mother of two and insurance broker, at her home in the suburbs of San Diego, California on Monday. She is said to be in critical condition.
Mr Malil was stopped by police as he got off a train in Oceanside, 35 miles (56km) north of San Diego, later that night. The actor was travelling there to meet with his lawyer with the intention of surrendering to police, according to a statement from Lt Phil Brust of the San Diego county sheriff's department.
The statement continued: "Malil and the victim had apparently been in a dating relationship which recently ended."
Mr Malil was later charged with attempted murder with special circumstances of premeditation, causing great bodily injury and using a deadly weapon. He remains in custody in lieu of $2m bail and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Vista, a town just north of San Diego. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted on all counts.
As well as his role in The 40 Year Old Virgin, Mr Malil had appeared in a number of TV shows, including NYPD Blue and Scrubs, as well as a 2001 Super Bowl advert for Budweiser.
