.....I was playing guitar 6 to 8 hours a day. I made my college beer money playing in a rock band but my true loves were travis and flat picking. I was feeling nostalgic this evening and my thoughts turned to old blind Doc Watson, the greatest flat picker ever to grace this beautiful earth and I thought I'd share a bit of his talent because 1) I know you never heard of him, and 2) I don't care what your music preferences are, you can't help but appreciate pure talent. Doc's style is the very definition of "clean".

Awesome!

I see he's using a kapo instead of doing bar chords. I prefer the kapo as well (it's far easier), but you get the hard core players that say you're a wuss for using a kapo.....I say they can stick it.....and they weren't picking as fast as this guy. Quarter note bar chords compared to the 16th stuff this guy is doing....yeah, I'd like to see someone bar that!

And yeah....I never heard of him before.

Flat picking various keys sometimes requires a kapo. In any case, nothing wrong with that, especially if you're a player. Here's Doc doing a simple travis picking tune, Deep River Blues. I used to play it (except I could sing) LOLOLOLOL

There are many styles of finger picking. Check out this version by Leo Kottke on his 12 string...

Kapos are a tool, not a crutch. Here's an example of without, Jim Cooke, a guy I was a kid with and played piano in his HS rock band. He grew up and played with Steve Miller among others before going out on his own and f*cking up his life...

Thanks to NGDB and an album called "Will the Circle be Unbroken" many of us long haired types back in the 70's got turned on to great artists like Doc Watson. Great thread Buzz.
