Born Hiram Ulysses Grant, Grant started signing his name Ulysses H. Grant
because he thought the initials HUG would not look good on a trunk at West
Point. His name was mistakenly listed as Ulysses Simpson Grant on his
application to West Point and Grant took that name for the rest of his life.
