I

Like I said before, I think it's only attachments. I use Photobucket so no matter what you can still see my pics.

Good point HC. Can't remember if I answered you before on this .. as I'm not sure whether or not guests can see Photobucket pics if I don't allow them to download / view images. I'll test this out and let you know what I find. Interesting point though. Now you got me wondering.

I voted yes.

I agree with others that all the pics are a bonus for this forum, and an enticement for others to join. . . and I know that many people lurk for a while before joining a site so, if they can't see pics (a great asset of this site), they are more likely to move on.

As far as privacy goes, there is none. If you post it on the internet, it's there forever and there's probably some perv in Malaysia Rule-34-ing himself into a coma right now. Registering is free and easy. So blocking images to non-members would only offer a veil of protection anyway.

I do think that allowing guests to see pics would draw in new members. We are visual creatures. I also understand that it makes some of us feel uncomfortable about "strangers" viewing personal, family pics. However, the truth is that there is very little privacy in the world and anything posted on the internet is out there in cyber space. Membership is just a few clicks away, as several have pointed out.

I don't see what the big deal is about having incentive to join. All one needs to do is look at the new members we have gotten. Joining certainly doesn't make them become active.

And FWIW, I stopped posting on another forum when they took away my new member privleges to view pics. Apparently they have a grace period for new members, then all of a sudden you cannot view pics anymore. It ticked me off because I had contributed with tutorials including pics, then BAM, I can't view my own pictures. Seemed lame.

Alot of forums don't allow you to view attachments, I think you can still view pics hosted from another site.

BT, no one is laying out any money here. Like any other site, it takes a 45 second registration.

The idea is not to "sell" but to "join" and those are two totally different things.

That's what I'm thinking. Joining doesn't cost anything, so it's not like you'll get 'taken' if you don't like what you see. On the other hand, to see our great food porn should require the 20 seconds it takes to join.

home page: like vera said use the best food pictures and change them frequently (deligate a mod the task of updating the home page photos maybe once a week/month or when they have time.) also the copy can say "A feast for the eyes, recipes for the body (or soul or some other appropriate word that sounds good)." or something catchy in a cool font and color that will pop.

jmh 2 cents Doc feel free to disregard.

how do they know that the pics are great if they can't see them?

i guess she'll die.

i understand your point, cheeks. it's just my opinion that i'd be more inclined to join if i saw something i liked rather than read a bunch of opinions of people i didn't know.

that's why most ads are visual rather than text based.

And just look how much more popular a recipe thread becomes once there's a pic of the final product.

exactly, chow. recipes are nice, replies about them are even better. but a good picture of the dish is worth the proverbial thousand words.

It bugs me when a forum says you have to register to see a pic. I can understand having to register to post….but to view a pic? I always wonder why? It’s the net, what are you trying to hide? Why do I HAVE to register just to see the rest of the post (the pic)…..are you farming email addresses for Spam? I just don’t like it.

Just my personal .02!

Just my few thoughts.....

  • I'm not sure why the emphasis on getting folks to "join" rather than "participate". Many people join forums, never to be heard from again. The real strength of a forum is the quality of the participation.
  • I often lurk in forums that I find interesting, but only join if I have something to say. Often that happens only after I've hung around long enough to get a 'feel' for the members, and decide that I'd like to be part of the group.
  • I go to many food sites, and some I just pass on by, while others earn a bookmark in my favorites. After several return visits, I often delete the bookmark because I've lost interest.
  • If I visit a forum that won't let me see the photos, or read the entire post, or any other restriction, I don't bother to hang around. There are a multitude of sites that I can visit that do allow me to visit unless/until I decide to join.
  • Viewing food pictures can be a big part of that enticement to participate. It can also be a reason to bookmark the site and return over and over again.
  • I seem to be one of the few who came here primarily because it was a food site. I stayed because I like some of the folks here. As long as you're using the name 'Net Cooking Talk' there ought to be some pretense that we are primarily here for the food. Pictures are a big enticement. Friendships usually come later.
  • If someone is concerned that their pictures will expose them to danger on the internet, they shouldn't be posting personal pictures. I truly don't believe that posting a picture of a roast chicken sitting on a platter is exposing myself to any danger.
  • That picture of a roast chicken just may cause someone to join just to ask how I managed to get it so evenly brown on all sides. And that question may prompt us to discuss technique, which is how we create 'Cooking Talk' on Net Cooking Talk.
  • Connecting the dots from my first point to the last, it seems that the pictures may create more participation as opposed to membership. I suggest that this is entirely the point.
My vote - show the pictures. Move the personal threads to the Back Room.

I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID!! LIKE I SAID BEFORE WE BEGIN A MEAL WITH OUR EYES. IF IT LOOKS PLEASING WE WANT TO KNOW HOW TO COOK A DISH. and thats how you get people to stay and look at the recipes and join in the forum talks.

I have deleted my pics on my profile, so, you can show what you want. I don't see anything wrong with the pics of food.
