Paring knife recommendations

I owe my wife a good paring knife. She asked for one last Christmas and I ordered it before Thanksgiving last year along with a couple other fine Japanese bigger knifes. Love the ones that made it but the paring knife was still on back order in March of this year so I canceled the order.

So now I'm pairing knife shopping again. I found these two and would like comments on each and other suggestions.

Here is the cheaper one:

and a very nice looking one:

Re: Pairing knife recommendations

I have the Shun as well as others. By far the 3.5" Shun is one of the best if not the best paring knife I've ever owned. It is a bit cheaper here http://www.cutleryandmore.com/kai.htm?src=Google&cam=Kershaw&sub=Shun&FamilyBD=1

I didn't notice much difference in feel between the 3.5" and 4" as that last 1/2" really doesn't make much difference. Below are pictures of the 4 I currently own. From the top down is the Shun 3.5", Harner custom made, Hattori FH and Tojiro DP sheeps foot style. The Shun is about $36 compared to the which are all more expensive or impossible to get such as the Tojiro. It also out cuts the all to boot.

Re: Pairing knife recommendations

Hey Doc, I bought one of these Kuhn paring knives just on a whim and I love it. I bought in in a WS store for under $10, I don't know why they're $12 online so you may be able to find them cheaper. I like the sheath it comes with, I can toss it in the RV or bring it with me to the races, or out to the smoker/grill to trim up some pork. I actually grab that knife before I use my $60 Lamson paring knife. The blade is nice and thin and they're dishwasher safe. I actually want to buy a few more so I don't keep using the same one. They also make an awesome $3 veg peeler.

The link is for the set, but they are also sold individually.

I have a few paring knives, but I hardly ever use them now. I've been using the Oxo
peeler for most peeling.

Re: Pairing knife recommendations

Thanks guys, just what I was looking for. Awesome. And not to expensive. I like the dishwasher safe feature of the ones that HC found, but I think DW was wanting one more along the lines of the 8" knife she got last Christmas, so I'm leaning towards Joe's suggestion right now. In the end I might just get both for her. :thumb: :D

Re: Pairing knife recommendations

One of the important things is to find out what length, of paring knife, she likes.
That's always the key, isn't it? ;) But this is a great link, Ratton! Thank you. Just reading this is giving me knife envy. I need a paring knife and I didn't even know it!

Re: Pairing knife recommendations

Thanks Ratton!!! Good link. Lordy, all the choices.
She does like the 3 1/2" versions of her paring knives, so that is the length I'm shopping for. I should have mentioned that to start with. :bonk:

(I should have checked my spelling of paring also. whoops. I fixed the ones i could.)
