Here’s my rendition of a loose meat sandwich called a “Maidrite”.

Keltin’s "Maidrites"

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef
3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
3 cups water

Procedure

You’ll need a large pot with a steamer insert to do this one. These look like a double boiler, but the top pot is actually the steamer.

Add the water to the bottom pot and then insert the steamer. Crumple the ground beef into the steamer and then cover. Stir the meat 3 or 4 minutes to break it up. Once the meat is nearly done (about 12 or so minutes) add the W. Sauce and stir to coat the meat well. Once coated, steam and additional 4-5 minutes and then remove to a covered dish to keep warm.

Serve this on fresh buns with mustard.

Notes

When you add the W. Sauce, a lot of it will drain down through the steamer holes as you stir the beef, so add it slowly, 1 tbsp at a time so that you really coat the beef. if need be, then use slightly more than 3 tbsp to get a good coating.

This is a loose meat sandwich and tastes great with just mustard. However, it does “fall apart” as the meat is constantly trying to escape the bun, but it is really tender and flavorful.

If you like add 1/4 cup finely chopped onion to the meat as you are steaming it.

For a change of pace, the next time you make Sloppy Joes, prepare your sauce in a skillet and keep warm. Then steam your beef as described here (but nix the W. sauce) and add the steamed meat to the Sloppy Joe mixture. The change in texture between steaming and browning is very pleasant and quite enjoyable.
