Jumbo paperclips! The deluxe model from BB&B sits in the drawer. An unfolded clip is faster. The large loop becomes the handle. You are always sure of extracting the pit. It leaves only one wound in the fruit. Finally, no clean up necessary.

I've always used a straw to just push them through.
I'll have to try that method Vera. What I found with the plunger type pitters though is that very often the pit rolls off to the side and isn't extracted. The paper clip scoops out the tooth breaking devils quite effectively.
