Mashed potatoes, no gravy, what do you use instead?

I mean, mashed potatoes need a little something over them. A pat of butter can work but what is better than butter if you have no gravy? Ideas please.

Nothing is better than butter, Doc - much better than gravy, IMO.

Sautéed onions might be another idea.

We here in Finland know nothing better with potatoes than the fresh dill.

And the butter and the pickled herring. I can´t wait when we will get new potatoes here...

Butter Salt and Pepper won out last night. I like some of the ideas though. Thanks :tiphat:

A fresh tomato sauce - onions & tomatoes fried together with mixed herbs
or
sauted mushrooms.

I would either use beef broth that I reduced or butter with garlic in it.

I keep both beef and chicken stock reductions (frozen in ice cube or muffin trays) for purposes like this.

Butter, garlic, and stock makes a tasty gravy.

-When I make stuffed peppers, I use the tomato sauce as the gravy as I normally make mashed to go with them.
- Yes to butter too and lots of black pepper (or Mrs Dash).
- I've been known to make a meal alone of nothing but mashed potatoes with creamed corn as a topping, or a good canned vegetable soup, or creamed spinach.
-Chives.
