CRAP !!
Murph did steal from the museum, but it wasn't the Hope Diamond...
In 1964, Jack Roland Murphy and two henchmen (Alan Kuhn and Roger Clark)
broke into the terribly under-secured NY American Museum of Natural History
and made away with J.P. Morgan's jewel collection (insured for $400,000 at
the time) - the highlight of which was the "Star of India," a 563-carat
Indian sapphire. Most of the jewels were later recovered, however some
beautiful pieces had been cut into smaller gems. The three thieves were
caught two days later and received three-year sentences each. Once released,
Murphy was convicted in 1967 of the murder of a 24-year old Florida girl and
a 1968 robbery of another woman. He was caught and received a life sentence.
Evidently, he found Jesus in prison, lead Bible studies, and was paroled in
1986. He now is Vice President of "International Network of Prison
Ministries" and has written a book which can be purchased on-line. (Go
figure)
