Garlic Scapes

I've heard about these things, but had never eaten or even seen them until this past weekend, when a woman at a Farmer's Market on Cape Cod had a big basket of them. Selling them for 5 for $1.00.

I had to ask her what they were and how to use them. She said they are the green tops of garlic, and have a mild garlic flavor. Can use them fresh in salads, in soups, for garnish ... but her favorite is to drizzle olive oil on them and grill them.

So, I cut them in half (they look like those weird Guiness Book of World Records longest fingernails!) and did as she suggested.

Delicious! They did have a mild garlic-asparagusy flavor which was excellent with our grilled sausages and corn on the cob.

I'll definitely get them again!

AH HA!! I grow those ...... when I forget about my garlic for awhile in warm weather. LOL I wonder if the tops of my old sprouting garlic will taste good?

No I usually throw them away. Next time I will let them grow long and use them.
