Loks to be off of a child's cap rifle. Any identifying markings to give a clue?

You've got the broken part of the lever upside down. The tab goes the other direction. It's the actuator for the safety interlock. You have to hold the lever tight to the stock so that tab pushes a release so the firing pin will drop and to insure the action is closed.

Just wait until you find a real gun. It's happened. I know several folks in my old club that found loaded disposed-of firearms.
