Not expressions, but still things people say that drive me nuts!
eKspecially
pitcher (when they mean piCture)
hunnerd
libary

  • masonary (instead of masonry - it's a hardware store thing. Almost everyone mispronounces it)
  • Febuary
There's another that drives me nuts, but I can't think of it at the moment.

I'll be back.

Must of.....as in He must of been really tired.

NO! It is must HAVE!

People have mistaken the sound of the contraction "must've" and erroneously beleive it is "must of".

Why can't they get it straight?

It's:

Loose as in goose.

Lose as in Jews or booze, you choose.....

gritting teeth!!!!!!!!!!

"gone missing" or "went missing" instead of "was missing" ..... grrrrrrr!

"I wish I would have known" instead of "I wish I had known"

Yep, drives me nuts too, as does the loose/lose thing.
Example: (this is not meant to be a political statement whatsoever):whistling:
President Obama is going to lose the next election because he and his administration are chock full of loose cannons.
See? now that was easy, wasn't it? :hide:

"iconic"

Have I posted that one before? If so, it bears repeating as hackneyed expression, and one that I hate.

I was walking to the office from the bus this AM and I thought how overworked "Awesome" is. Do something good and it's Awesome!!!! I was thinking - The power of nature is truely awesome. many other things, not so much. Then I saw the video that Buzz posted now THAT is Awesome. Nature is all powerful.

"Sammies".

Good Gawd! I'm not speaking with two year olds. The word is sandwiches. Thank you very much Rachael Ray for popularizing this baby-talk expression.

Ditto, all of you!

Andy, I banned the expression "awesome" from my own vocabulary several years ago.

SS, I have NEVER used the word "sammies" or "sammiches".

Peep, "epic" hasn't entered my radar until now.

Uncle Ralph, will have to check out your link after work.

Got another one. Let's see if I can explain it without sound.

Used to be, when someone wanted to express "That's a shame", they would say, "Awwwwwww!" with the voice starting higher and then going down the notes scale.

Now the young people are saying "awwww" (women, mainly) with three notes: higher, lower, and back to the higher starting note.

Yechh. Doesn't even come close to sounding sincere.

Comment made last week on Portland radio that LOL has made the Oxford Dictionary. The DJ stated that by the time that phrase makes the lexicon, it should be retired. Here here!

You had me laughing in tears
I have to admit, I make a lot of mistakes. First 8 years I learned the New Yo'k english.. then when I moved to Boise I had to repair everything.

My grandpa used to say this a lot
"Don’t shit next to your house, you might step in it"
Later I found out the meaning... when a man was

with a close friend of his wife and she found out :D

And my grandma used to say "I’ll beat you #1"
I never found out, she never beat me

And one expression I hate the most is "read my lips"

"Oh Mylanta" seems to be the urban speak catchphrase for frustration amongst the young nurse aides at work.
It's annoying, I say! LOL
